back 2 back is built around a spontaneous live jam by dj pippi, tucillo and kiko navarro in dj pippis studio on ibiza. in a few hours they had finished the track. the ep opens with tucillo and willi graffs dub, a muscular, driving, stripped down rework of the original for a popping dance floor. kokis back dub is also a floor tool that has been well tested this summer by kiko navarro with great results. the ep finishes with a very cool afriki soul remix by bhoddi satva.

breaking onto the scene via a series of anonymous 12inch, it was after garnering reverence as a big name producer in disguise that cottam was unveiled to be the humble newcomer paul cottam. rising through the early rave scene in his hometown of preston, he first cut his teeth as a dj warming up for the likes of surgeon, dave clarke and regis. despite his techno upbringing, it was the slo-mo tempos of mark e and the revenge that inspired cottam to produce his own brand of dusty soul and hip hop-grounded house. however, in april cottam returned to his roots with >sunrise sunset< on use of weapons, sinking a rave core down to his signature slung bpm. it is a journey into sub-aquatic acid house that began with a series of remixes for luv jam, pattern select and morning factory, and one that he continues to explore on his aus music debut. aptly titled >deep deep down< sculpts the feeling of acid techno into warm slo-mo house. ukrainian producer vakula takes the track off on another tangent entirely, stripping away its propulsive chugging heartbeat and replacing it with an off-kilter, spaced-out pulse reminiscent of theo parrish when he s in that kind groove. on the flip, >twang< is a return to cottam s brand of languid, soulful house, steeped with groove destined to incite the dancefloor shuffle.

safeword is an exciting new act comprising of 2 dedicated us-based producers, clint stewart and marc smith. their low slung, warm and sexy sound already gave way to one ep on paso music and now we find them really hitting their stride with their debut for dessous. lead track >you can you will< introduces us to safeword s world, a sleazy, percussive and intricate gel of textures, flavours and audio fetishes. punchy, bright production characterises this modern house jam. the eventual arrival of a deep and spritual melody is surprising and instantly turns the snaking drum tool of the introductory minutes into an anthemic, autumnal beauty. leading dessous and poker flat man phonique turns his hand to the title track with a cheeky, energetic remix. aimed at the floor we find a more uptempo groove at the heart of his mesmerising tech-house re-work. the soft bell tones floating throughout >tangent< are perfectly melancholic, while tough driving beats urge us forward, making the perfect partnership bewteen cinematic sound design and bass-heavy floor dynamics.

in its original form, holy ghost!s debut album cut >hold my breath< is, pure and simple, great dancefloor electronic pop, in the hands of shadowy duo tiger & woods, the song has been totally reshaped and refracted through 80s r&b radio. they have slowed the pace and inserted synth-funk hot flashes that recall prince – and, no kidding, the time, and jimmy jam & terry lewis – to create a mood that fits comfortably (and pleasurably) within their future boogie m.o. cosmic kids ron poznansky and dan terndrup have taken the track in a more tensely dramatic direction. it might be the vaguely darkened synthline upon which much of that track sits that lends itself to its more intense feel here, and gives it such a pleasant nocturnal feel. finally, theres falty dls re-envisioning, which goes down awfully smooth for a track so full of the big, thick, bumping bass beats. it’s an aural pleasure to find yourself dreamily lost in the brooklyn, new york producer/djs halls of reverberating sound.

chicagos ricardo miranda makes his debut for the ace stilove4music label, maintaining a fine year in which he has already dropped some serious heat on rush hour sub-label hour house is your rush and his own noble square imprint. title track >102point7< is all jagged synths, throbbing arpeggios, slashing claps and a rolling acid groove, marking it out as one of his most incendiary productions to date. on the flip >rotary cells< is deeper still, a 909-led jacker with undulating layers of sub bass augmented by a wonderfully woozy vocal which extols the virtues of true chicago house. this is followed by >greenline<, a stripped back jam with scuttling hats and the kind of paranoid synth melody that wouldnt sound out of place in jeff mills something in the sky series. this is dark, raw, pulsating dance music - highly recommended.

dresdens cult label uncanny valley returns with the charming catalogue number six. following up jacob korns first artist ep for the label its c-beams turn now to continue the series of artist eps. break sls and sandrow ms project can be referred to as a true labels child. musically, both artists got to know each other only when the label was founded. for >strollin< they lend the vocal talents by tina slotta who is associated with uncanny valley as well. the result is an irresistible house-jam. easy vibrant beats are complemented by birds twittering, warm keys and tinas carefree lyrics. jackmates remix toughen things up and transfers the tracks with mighty detroit-chords into a real monster for the dancefloor. the slightly murkier >scrapyard< takes its strength out of the interaction between its vehement beats and the c-beams-typical sound excursions. finally, the instrumental of >strollin< rounds up the ep.

after a series of classically oriented 12 inches with deep debts owed to old school detroit and chicago vibes, remain & mlle caros release stands out as a thoroughly modern model of analog dancefloor ammunition. while >heat< and >rogue< dispense with homage and go for the jugular with darkside intensity, the remixes hand chosen by remain and caro open things up, revealing undiscovered dimensions to the music. holmar filipsson from thugfucker (life & death records) teams up with neurotic drum bands ulysses to transform >heat< into a mid-tempo disco chugger heavy on the drums and boogie bass. populette unleash a late night dancefloor bomb complete with hypnotic arpeggios for their corking refix of >rogue<.

the sixth release on the excellent parisian imprint my love is underground comes from inner sense - aka french producer henri fontaine - who serves up only his second ever solo release (his first was back in 2006!) sprawled across the a-side you will find >lowdown<, a jam that brings to mind the output of new york house dons masters at work (indeed look closely at the centre of this record and you will see the totally appropriate inscribing >1993 forever<). swirling chords combine with a thumping kick, stuttering keys and, of course, a killer vocal wail for a slice of what can only be described as proper house music. >wanna dub with u< opens proceedings on the flip with the kind of thumping bass drum and funk-infused skipping hats that would make it a snug fit in the kerri chandler back catalogue and, again, the vocals are absolutely gorgeous. finally, >rawllin< wraps up the ep on a more stripped back yet equally groovy tip. limited to 500 copies on rather fetching 180g orange vinyl - essential.

and once gain we are back. after a welcome pause dumb unit returns with an energetic four tracker from our man in nyc : elon. a long time label mate elon strips it all back to create a bumping and infectious groove that while resolutely dumb unit is uncharacteristic in its nakedness! no decor here, only pure syncopated and pushing rhythms to notch it up a tad. perfect for leading the lions back to the warehouse and off the beach into the cooler months. >put those shades away son we going inside<. the energetic pacers of elon are complemented by a deeper excursion, a superb exercise one remix that takes the original and works it into a pulsing main floor late night jam.

after 2 years of throwing events in new york, stranjjur nycs next logical step was to move on to a more international platform. after introducing artists such as milton jackson, carlo lio, spencer parker, manik, till von sein, alex niggemann, pezzner and many others to the big apple, stranjjurs kev obrien (alongside label partner andy inelli) have decided to carry on the same a&r principals that made the events a success over to stranjjurs newest venture: a fully-fledged record label. the new brooklyn-based label has decided to hit the ground running with its debut ep coming from hot italian duo, lula circus. having also just recently been signed to one of americas hottest labels, culprit, its safe to say that the lula boys (danilo and sergio) are on the cusp of becoming stars of the underground dance scene. the vinyl edition of the miami vices ep features two amazing original tunes from lula circus, including title track, miami vice, which takes aim at the dance floor with a full arsenal of heavy bass and a powerful disco-inspired hook that instantly grabs a hold of the soul and refuses to let go. ovum and hot natured wonder-kid, manik, delivers a highly addictive remix, by slicing the main hook up, while supporting it with an insanely groovy bass line. on the b-side is pumpin groovin moovin, a future-funk jam thats carried by a focused low-end groove and catchy vocals. the remix comes courtesy of freeranges (and recent crosstown rebels signee) pezzner, and its one of his biggest remixes ever. this one has been receiving lots of early promo hype, thanks in part to maya jane coles, who included it in her bbc radio essential mix earlier this month. mayas support has helped to create a global whirlwind of anticipation amongst house music aficionados for the release of this incredible ep. the time has finally come for stranjjur imprint to be born!

so we went predominanlty stateside for our last outing, and decided to bring things back home this time. hoya003 is a strictly uk affair. opening up on the a-side is one of rudest producers and djs the uk has going for it. this aint a comment on her manners though, they are as impeccable as her production. after ikonika sent us a zip of some hoya potentials, we just knew >fleas< had to be the one featured on this 12 inch. a more sinister, rolling, emotional jam, it still packs as much as punch as ikonikas dj sets. kicking off the b-side is the homie om unit. now, this guy … this guy. are there any superlatives left to desribe his sonic masterpieces that have rocked too many dancefloors and had as many producers scratching their heads and re-assessing their mix-downs? an instant favourite, >fibonnaci 10< was one of the earliest cuts lined up for a release and when you listen you will see why. this guy. seriously. bringing things to a close, we hand over to one of our favourites from the flourishing cardiff scene. why doesnt monky have more music out? is one of those questions that has been asked too many times for our liking. so much so, we may have to take it upon ourselves to change that. but, for now, just enjoy >hipster<. a killer synth-laden nod to early ukg, but looking forward as opposed to sideways. enjoy.

early support: hell, josh wink, ame, laurent garnier, raresh, dixon, jimpster, terry francis, ... ribn return to the mild pitch camp with two fresh tracks and a stunning remix by the revenge. >no place< is a deep diving funky house jam, that combines fragile soul samples and buzzing electronics, reminiscent of old playhouse or matthew herbert records. on remix duties here is no other than graeme clark aka the revenge. the scottish man-of-the-moment transforms the original into a straight and sizzling club roller that makes great use of the original samples and strips them down for maximum dancefloor impact. turn over to the flip side and ribn take it back to their dubbed-out deep techno trademark sound on the epic >save me<. punchy beats, driving chords and bright synth carpets make this track a prime example of what youve missed if you havent had a chance to check out the duo live yet
